Not a dog. Not a frog. A newborn that had every reason to quit on day one.

Milani is a reticulated giraffe calf, delivered by emergency C-section at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas, after her mother's organs began shutting down. She was born too early to breathe on her own.

Her keepers built the rest of her beginning by hand: oxygen through a taped tube, steroids for her lungs, tube-fed colostrum and banked giraffe plasma flown in from another zoo. What a healthy calf does in fifteen minutes took her a full week.

She stood up on day seven. That's the ticker. A token for everything that gets back up.
